Understanding Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of connective tissue disorders that can affect the joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, blood vessels, and nervous system. Connective tissue acts as part of the body’s structural support system, helping provide stability and integrity throughout the body.
When connective tissue is affected, the body may become more prone to:

When connective tissue is affected, the body may become more prone to:

  • Joint instability
  • Frequent sprains or injuries
  • Chronic pain
  • Muscle tension or spasms
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness or imbalance
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Brain fog
  • Sensory sensitivity
  • Difficulty recovering from physical stress

The most common subtype is hypermobile EDS (hEDS), which is often associated with excessive joint movement and instability. Some people with EDS are highly functional and simply need periodic support to help manage flare-ups and maintain alignment. Others experience more complex, daily symptoms that require a careful and ongoing approach.
We also commonly see co-occurring conditions such as:

  • POTS
  • Dysautonomia
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Post-concussion symptoms
  • ADHD and neurodevelopmental concerns
  • Chronic headaches and migraines
  • Anxiety related to chronic stress on the nervous system
For many patients, symptoms fluctuate. Stress, poor sleep, fatigue, illness, overactivity, hormonal changes, or injury can all contribute to flare-ups.

Why Symptoms May Persist

EDS is currently managed rather than cured. Because connective tissue affects so many systems in the body, symptoms can become chronic and complex over time.

Many patients feel stuck in cycles of:

  • Pain and muscle guarding
  • Instability and compensation
  • Nervous system hypersensitivity
  • Fatigue and reduced activity
  • Recurrent injuries or flare-ups

The nervous system is often working overtime to create stability where the body feels unstable. This can lead to increased muscle tension, altered posture and movement patterns, dizziness, headaches, and heightened sensitivity to stress.

Other factors that may contribute to persistent symptoms include:

  • Prior injuries or concussions
  • Poor biomechanics or posture
  • Vestibular dysfunction
  • Inflammation
  • Sleep disruption
  • Stress overload
  • Dysautonomia or POTS
  • Fibromyalgia or chronic pain syndromes
Patients with multiple overlapping conditions often need a more individualized and gradual approach to care.
