Understanding Stroke

There are two different forms of stroke, hemorrhagic and ischemic. In the hemorrhage, the blood vessels have broken and the blood leaks into the surrounding tissue. This is commonly caused by hypertension, high blood pressure. In an ischemic stroke, there is something that clogs the artery. This is blood going from the heart to the tissue. This is more common than a hemorrhagic stroke. You can also have a transient ischemic attack (TIA). This would be a form of ischemic stroke that is shorter in duration, and we should use it as a warning sign. The most common symptoms to watch for are a loss of balance, a change in vision, drooping of the face, weakness in the arms, and slurred speech. How much a stroke interferes with activities depends to a great degree on the number of lifestyle factors, age, diet, gender, tobacco use, diabetes, family history, etc.

Why Symptoms Can Continue

After a stroke, there is long-term damage to the central nervous system. The brain needs to reorganize its activities to work around the area of the brain that has been damaged. The most common symptoms that patients will see after a stroke are fatigue, spasticity and nerve pain. The process of healing and reorganizing the brain through neuroplasticity can be very slow, and it gets slower over time.
