Understanding Tech Neck & Poor Posture

What Is Tech Neck?

Tech Neck is a term used to describe the neck, shoulder, and upper back pain that can develop from spending long periods looking down at phones, tablets, laptops, or other electronic devices.
When your head stays tilted forward for hours each day, the muscles, joints, and ligaments of the neck work much harder than they were designed to. Over time, this repeated strain can contribute to pain, stiffness, headaches, and reduced mobility.
While anyone can develop Tech Neck, it’s becoming increasingly common in adults, teenagers, and even younger children as screen time continues to increase.

Common Symptoms

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Upper back pain
  • Shoulder tightness
  • Frequent headaches
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Muscle fatigue
  • Jaw discomfort or TMJ symptoms
  • Tingling or numbness into the arms or hands
  • Poor posture
  • Eye strain
  • Fatigue after computer work

Common Causes

  • Computer work
  • Working from home
  • Looking down at a phone
  • Gaming
  • Reading in poor posture
  • Long commutes
  • Poor workstation ergonomics
  • Lack of movement throughout the day
Often, it’s not one long day that causes problems but months or years of repeated stress on the neck and upper back.

Why Symptoms Can Continue

Poor posture is more than simply “standing up straighter.”
When joints become restricted and muscles remain under constant tension, movement becomes less efficient. Over time, the body begins to adapt to these positions, making it harder to maintain good posture without discomfort.

Other factors that may contribute include:

=
Muscle weakness
=
Reduced spinal mobility
=
Joint stiffness
=
Previous injuries
=
Poor workstation setup
=
Vision problems causing forward head posture
=
Stress-related muscle tension
=
Decreased balance and body awareness
Without addressing these contributing factors, symptoms often return soon after temporary relief.

How Chiropractic May Help

At Apex Chiropractic & Wellness Center, we don’t simply look at where it hurts—we evaluate why your body is moving the way it is.

Treatment may include:

Gentle Chiropractic Adjustments

Helping restore healthy movement to restricted joints and improve spinal mobility.

Postural Assessment

Evaluating how you stand, sit, and move to identify habits contributing to pain.

Rehabilitation Exercises

Improving strength, flexibility, and endurance of the muscles that support healthy posture.

Functional Neurology

When appropriate, evaluating how the brain and nervous system contribute to posture, balance, and movement control.

RightEye® Assessment

Vision and eye movement play a significant role in posture. Objective eye movement testing can help identify neurologic factors contributing to abnormal posture or movement patterns.

Ergonomic Education

Simple changes to your workstation, desk setup, and daily habits can help reduce stress on your spine.

Lifestyle Recommendations

Strategies to improve movement throughout the day, reduce repetitive strain, and support long-term spinal health.
This approach focuses on improving how your jaw functions over time — not just temporarily reducing symptoms.

Our Approach at Apex

Some patients primarily need improved spinal mobility, while others have muscle imbalances, previous injuries, vision-related issues, tongue tie, or neurologic factors affecting posture and movement.

My first visit with Dr Moje has already brought noticeable improvement with relief. I would’ve never expected to be breathing more fully but I noticed that as well. Who knew he could work on my vagus nerve?! I woke up the next day feeling so much calmer. His neurological approach is remarkably different from other Chiropractors. I’m so glad I found this practice!

As a mother of a child in pain, I can't express how wonderful Dr. Jahnke and Dr. Moje are. My daughter has a connective tissue disease that left her in pain daily. She grew up using a wheelchair and FAO's to assist her in daily life. As soon as I found out that Dr. Jahnke knew what Ehler's Danlos was, I made the appointment. My daughter went for several visits but she said after the first few she could feel a huge difference. A month ago, she hiked up a 1.4 mile hike at a 60 degree incline. She would never have made it or even been able to try without Apex Chiropractic's assistance. I highly recommend them especially if you have EDS. There is no reason to suffer in silence and in pain when Apex is around.

Dr Moje has been a life saver for me. Earlier in the year I fell and suffered a concussion. I had been to several doctors and therapist with little improvement. After seeing Dr Moje for a couple of months, I am feeling much better! He has been kind, patient and knowledgeable and given me very helpful referrals as well. His care is holistic and has put me on a path to physical and emotional healing. I highly recommend seeing Dr Moje to start your healing journey!
