Chiropractic Neurology for Bell’s Palsy

Chiropractic neurology for this condition can be life changing. In addition to cervical spine adjustments, patients respond well to desensitization of the sensory areas within the facial nerve. By working on these reflex points, the body is able to come back to normal faster than when left to recover on its own. This technique will assist in reducing the inflammation related to facial nerve irritation.

Understanding Bell’s Palsy

Bell’s Palsy is an acute paralysis of the facial nerve. About 85% of people recover from the condition by using a steroid. It mostly comes on during colder temperatures, but pregnancy is the most at risk group. There is a strong association with infection, but the condition is still considered idiopathic. This means that they are not completely sure as to what is causing the problem. The common symptoms for the condition are drooping, drooling, and difficulty moving the eye on one side of the face.

Why Symptoms Can Continue

If the facial nerve is inflamed to a severe enough degree for a long enough period of time, there could be long term nerve damage. Cranial nerves do not heal like peripheral nerves. This is why it is important to act on this problem as quickly as possible to reduce nerve inflammation. This failed healing will appear as persistent facial weakness, twitching or other involuntary movements, and eye problems. The twitching or involuntary movement occurs when the nerve regenerates to the wrong muscles. This is termed synkinesis. Then you will have blinking when you smile or other contraction patterns.

How Chiropractic Neurology May Help

Chiropractic Neurology is a safe alternative in recovering from Bell’s Palsy. The adjustments to the spine and the neuromuscular work can help to reduce the inflammation. This will help with faster healing, as well as reduced likelihood of long-term problems. The faster the compression of the nerve is resolved, the less likely there will be chronic side-effects of the entrapment.
